Congenital ear deformity, which is manifested by the opening of the ear edges forward and the absence of ear folds, is called prominent ear deformity. Hearing function is normal. The procedure performed to correct this deformity is called prominent ear surgery (otoplasty).

Prominent ears appear to be large as they are very prominent towards the front. However, they are usually normal in size. 80-90% of ear development is completed at the age of 6 years. In other words, at the age of 6, we have ears that are close to adult ear sizes. For this reason, it is normal for the ears to appear larger in small children with prominent ears who need ear aesthetics. In prominent ear deformity, the angle of the ear with the head is wider than it should be. This shows the ear open outwards. This is especially evident when viewed from behind. The folds that should be in the upper 2/3 of the ear are not formed and the ear looks straight as if it has been ironed.

It is a condition that can disturb people of all ages, which is called prominent ears among the people and that the ears look excessively large when viewed from the front. I have many patients who apply with this problem, regardless of whether they are men or women. Ears reach their adult size at the age of 6 years. For this reason, it is recommended to perform prominent ear surgery, preferably before primary school, as an exception to other aesthetics. Thus, this problem is avoided without being exposed to the criticism of schoolmates.

One day after the ear aesthetic surgery, the dressing is changed and a hair band is attached to cover the entire ear, which is not too tight. This band should be worn continuously for about 3 weeks. In this way, the load on the sutures holding the cartilage that wants to return to its original state is reduced. The cartilage hardens and heals in its new position. Another function of the headband is to reduce edema in the first days after ear aesthetics, to allow the swelling to heal a little faster and to prevent the ear from rubbing against the pillow or being forced while sleeping.

There may be numbness in the ear that will last for several weeks. Hair drying and blow-drying should be avoided during this period.
